Helpful Links
There are many useful resources for clients and parents on the internet, but most people are so busy these days that it’s hard to find the best ones. I have selected a few I feel are valuable, to save you time.
Please note: the information gathered here is included for your convenience. Only a qualified, licensed professional can issue a valid diagnosis, treatment plan, or specific health-related service, and a diagnosis should be given only after a formal, in-person assessment process (diagnostic interviews, history taking, and clinical assessment). Questionnaires, surveys, screening inventories, and other tools obtained from or through this website and its links are for information gathering only, and do not constitute a valid diagnosis or the beginning of treatment with Dr. Goldner.
General mental health
These sites cover many areas of mental health — from anxiety and depression to ADHD, Asperger’s, and visual processing problems. Good places to search for credible information that can lead you toward effective treatment.
Searchable information on all major mental-health disorders.
A government resource covering a wide variety of mental-health issues.
The National Institutes of Health’s site for patients and their families, produced by the National Library of Medicine — information about diseases, conditions, and wellness in plain language.
Mental-health conditions don’t only affect adults. Research shows that most mental disorders follow a developmental course that typically starts early in life.
Learning disabilities
A good overview of learning disabilities (LD), including definitions, characteristics, and common behaviors. [TBD — Aaron: the old deep link (about.com) is dead; confirm the exact Verywell page you want.]
Giftedness (intellectual giftedness)
Some children have a superior level of intellect and functioning in one or more areas. Being smart, however, doesn’t mean a child has no problems — gifted children often face challenges that require specific support and strategies. A good place to start learning about your gifted child.
Education rights for children with disabilities
IDEA legislation protects the right to an education for children with disabilities and learning disabilities — important for parents to know.
Vision impairment
A portion of people with learning disabilities may be misdiagnosed or under-diagnosed if vision impairment isn’t identified and corrected. Visual misalignment of the eyes can result from genetic issues, accidents, or concussions.
A vision clinic specializing in diagnosing and treating visual misalignment problems that can cause or worsen learning disabilities, anxiety, and other issues. (Yes, that is me in their videos — I volunteered to be interviewed because they have helped me and so many of my clients.)
Sleep problems
Sleep problems are more than an annoyance — they can lead to severe impairment in school and work, life satisfaction, and overall success, and some can cause physical health problems as well.
One of a handful of physicians dual-board-certified in both sleep medicine and ENT (ear, nose, and throat). Dr. Rosner can help diagnose and treat sleep apnea and narcolepsy — two issues that can cause learning-disability and ADHD symptoms.
